The Supportive Whispers of Spirit

Writer's picture: Jesse PrejeanJesse Prejean

I was in the middle of something profound—a deep, exhausting journey of healing. It was the kind of work that makes your soul ache and your heart feel like it’s been turned inside out. For days, I’d been peeling back layers of childhood trauma, facing a painful realization about my sense of self-worth.

For as long as I could remember, I had carried the weight of feeling unseen, unheard, and unimportant. It was a core wound rooted in my family’s emotional neglect, one that had manifested in so many ways throughout my life. As I traced this thread deeper, the truth hit me like a wave: I’d spent so many years trying to find my worth outside myself—through others, through approval, through fitting in. But no matter how much I gave or how hard I tried, I always felt like something was missing.

It was overwhelming, this awareness. I had come to terms with it intellectually, but emotionally, it was still a heavy burden. I was starting to understand why I had struggled so much to fit into this world. I realized that this belief—that I wasn’t enough just as I was—had been the root of so much pain and dysfunction in my life.

I remember that day so clearly. I was by myself, standing in an elevator, feeling emotionally exhausted from the work I’d been doing. I was attending a concert in downtown Austin, but my mind was elsewhere, lost in the depths of my own healing. As the elevator descended, a group of people entered and pressed the button for the next floor. I smiled politely, masking the heaviness I was carrying inside. It felt like I was moving through the motions, trying to appear “fine” when inside, I was anything but. It was an eerily silent elevator ride to their destination.

When the elevator reached their floor, the people left, and the doors closed, something caught my eye—a small blue card lying on the ground, seemingly out of nowhere. I could see that it said, "Mindful Messages" and had some designs on it.

The Card
The Card

I bent down and picked it up, turning it over to read the words printed on it.

The card said, “I Am Enough. I am beautiful just as I am. I am loved just as I am. I am worthy just by being me. I don’t need to fit in; I just need to be myself, and the right people will come into my life. Those who see and appreciate me for all that I am.”

The Message
The Message

In that moment, my entire body relaxed. I was in disbelief for a second. It was as if the universe itself had reached out to me, a quiet whisper saying, “You are seen. You are enough.” The weight of it all began to lift, if only for a moment. I couldn’t help but feel like this was no coincidence—that this card had appeared at exactly the right time, offering me exactly what I needed to hear.

I wondered, for just a second, if the group of people in the elevator had somehow known what I was going through. Had they left the card there for me? But no, that didn’t make sense. How could they? How could anyone know what was going on in my heart at that moment?

And yet, deep down, I knew that it wasn’t just a coincidence. It was a sign. A message from Spirit, reminding me of my inherent worth, especially during a time when I was struggling to see it myself.

I stood there for a few moments, taking in the words on that card. And although my mind tried to rationalize it, a part of me just let go and allowed the truth to sink in. I didn’t need to fit into anyone’s mold or seek validation from others anymore. I was enough, just as I was. The right people would come into my life—those who saw me for who I truly was.

That day, in that elevator, with the world moving around me, I felt seen in a way I hadn’t in years. And for the first time in a long while, I allowed myself to believe it.

This message from Spirit empowered me to persist in the healing work I needed to undertake, allowing me to fully embrace my true self and value on this planet!

It’s funny how the universe works—how, when you’re at your lowest, it sends you something so simple, so profound, that it shifts the very foundation of your reality. Sometimes, the message comes in the form of a small blue card that tells you exactly what you need to hear: You are enough.
